The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
L'Interdit started as a secret. In 1957, Hubert de Givenchy created a fragrance exclusively for his friend and muse Audrey Hepburn. When he suggested releasing it to the public, she playfully protested that it was forbidden, giving the scent its name. The name stuck, and the fragrance became an icon. Six decades later, Givenchy's perfumers revisited that original tension: what does 'forbidden' smell like for a modern woman who makes her own rules? The 2019 Eau de Toilette carries the same provocative DNA as its predecessors but carves its own path, bright poppy instead of headier florals, a lighter touch overall, the same audacious spirit.
The EDT concentration matters here. At 50% intensity, it trades the Parfum's weight for something airier, more immediate. The poppy note is unusual in white floral compositions, it adds a faint mineral quality that keeps the opening from feeling too sweet. Then the tuberose absolute arrives, and it doesn't tiptoe. The combination of tuberose absolute, orange blossom, and musk creates a white floral heart that feels opulent without tipping into nostalgia. It's the modern interpretation: familiar enough to comfort, bold enough to stand apart.
The evolution
The opening is poppy, brief and mineral, almost a rumor. It vanishes before you've pinned it down, which is intentional. Tuberose takes over within minutes, dominant and creamy, with orange blossom adding a slightly bitter edge that keeps it from becoming saccharine. The musk threads through, pulling everything closer to skin. By the third hour, the white florals begin to recede and the vetiver surfaces, cool, mineral, slightly smoky. Patchouli anchors the drydown, lending an earthy darkness that feels like the opposite of the tender opening. Eight hours in, what's left is a skin-close warmth: patchouli, vetiver, and the memory of something white and luminous that was never actually innocent.
Cultural impact
L'Interdit has been Givenchy's signature fragrance line since the original's debut alongside Audrey Hepburn. The 2019 EDT joined a family that includes the original EDP and the more intense Parfum concentration, each interpreting the 'forbidden' concept differently. The EDT version appeals to those who want the white floral-tuberose signature but prefer something lighter and more versatile, a daily wear alternative to the Parfum's fuller presence.
