The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2024, Givenchy returned to where it all began for the house's masculine identity. Paul Léger, the perfumer behind Gentleman Original 2024, revisited the spirit of the 1974 original, the fragrance that first defined what a Givenchy man could be. This isn't a reimagining. It's a restoration. The 2024 edition carries the same soul: warm spice, dark earth, and Russian leather that speaks rather than whispers. Just a fragrance that asks you to commit.
The combination of Indonesian patchouli and Haitian vetiver is deliberate, two earthy materials that share a root but diverge in personality. Patchouli is rich, almost sweet in its darkness. Vetiver is mineral, cool, slightly smoky. Together, they create a heart that feels neither warm nor cold, it just is. Then comes the Russian leather. Not the polished, new car interior leather. This is worn leather, worked leather, leather that has history. It's the note that transforms this from a pleasant fragrance into a statement.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly, tarragon and cinnamon hitting like a first impression that refuses to be forgotten. The cinnamon is warm but not sweet; the tarragon adds an herbal edge that keeps it from being simply spicy. The heart is where the fragrance lives. Indonesian patchouli and Haitian vetiver emerge slowly, cooling the warmth from the opening without replacing it. The patchouli brings depth; the vetiver brings structure. Then the base: Russian leather. It doesn't arrive all at once, it creeps in as the vetiver begins to fade, adding a dry, almost smoky quality that lingers. On fabric, it can last into the next day.
Cultural impact
In 2024, Paul Léger revisits that spirit, bringing an honest character to a new generation. Warm spice, dark earth, and Russian leather speak rather than whisper, communicating with quiet authority. The fragrance asks you to commit. The composition balances warm and cool, bold and restrained, creating a masculine identity that feels strong yet sensitive, classic yet modern.
