The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Corinne Holt spent time studying Palo Santo in its Peruvian context, where bundles of the dried wood have been burned for centuries during ceremonial smudging. She wanted to honor that sacred quality rather than reproduce it literally. Growing up in Los Angeles with access to California's own native sage varieties, she recognized a kinship between the herbal sharpness of sage and the wood's smoky warmth. Working within Geneviève Fragrances' commitment to vegan, sustainable materials, she selected Guaiac Wood for its responsibly sourced profile and paired it with sage extracted through cold-pressed separation to preserve its green, almost mentholated clarity. The resulting structure honors the Palo Santo tradition while remaining entirely her own.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of restraint. Sage provides a bridge between modern aromatics and traditional herbalism without overwhelming with lavender or rosemary. Guaiac Wood was chosen over actual Palo Santo for sustainability and consistency, but the warm resinous profile honors the original material. Coumarin and Amber serve a dual purpose: they extend wear time while creating softness against the wood's natural smokiness. Musk acts as an anchor, ensuring the scent evolves close to the body rather than projecting aggressively.
The evolution
The scent begins the moment Sage hits the air, a green freshness that recalls the plant's recognition as a cleansing herb across multiple traditions. Within minutes the herbal sharpness recedes as the heart emerges, dominated by Guaiac Wood arriving with a mellow smokiness that evokes the burning of Palo Santo without replicating smoke exactly. The woodnote holds steady for the majority of wear time, warm and meditative, before the base molecules begin their slower reveal. Coumarin surfaces first among the base notes, lending a faint tonka-adjacent sweetness that softens the wood's edges. Amber then inserts its resinous warmth, pulling the Guaiac Wood's smoke into something creamier and more Intimate. Musk settles last, barely perceptible but crucial, creating the sensation that the fragrance has become part of the skin rather than sitting atop it.
Cultural impact
Since its debut, Palo Santo has resonated with a growing community of fragrance enthusiasts who value vegan, cruelty‑free compositions that honor natural ingredients. The scent’s sage top note evokes traditional cleansing rituals, while the guaiac wood heart references indigenous South American incense practices. By integrating these elements, the fragrance bridges contemporary minimalist aesthetics with cultural reverence, encouraging mindful wear and sparking conversations about sustainable sourcing and ethical perfumery. Its popularity on social platforms has inspired user‑generated content that celebrates both personal expression and respect for heritage, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to authenticity and ecological responsibility.
