Why it exists.
The beginning
Jurassic Flower arrived in 2020, part of a lineup from fūm that includes Ariose, Winter Crocus, The Space Between, and other compositions. The name does what it promises: it gestures toward something ancient and strange, flowers that feel prehistoric rather than cultivated. fūm composed the answer as a sensory exercise in what the earth might smell like before anything was domesticated. The composition draws heavily on citrus and green notes, with a thread of salt woven through that creates an unexpected tension. There's grapefruit, bergamot, Californian lemon, bitter orange, and neroli on top, magnolia and mango blossom in the heart, and a base of white ambergris, seaweed absolute, eucalyptus, and musk.
What's genuinely unusual here is how the composition builds its heart. Magnolia and seaweed absolute create a center of gravity that gives the bright top notes something to lean against rather than just fading underneath them. The seaweed absolute is a curious presence in the blend. It's marine without being aquatic, briny without smelling like a beach. It adds a mineral dimension that shifts the eucalyptus from reading like a spa into something closer to a greenhouse, or a conservatory full of strange specimens.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes are all announcement. Grapefruit, bergamot, Californian lemon, bitter orange, neroli, every bright thing in the citrus family's arsenal shows up at once. It's almost aggressive, a wall of brightness that reads cold and green rather than sweet. Then something shifts. The eucalyptus settles, and the magnolia starts to rise through the citrus like steam off hot stone. This is where the heart shows its hand: magnolia blended with mango blossom and seaweed, creating something that smells humid and alive. Not a soliflore, not a traditional floral, but a hybrid thing that feels like it's growing rather than sitting still. As the hours pass, white ambergris takes over, creamy and warm, and the residual citrus and green notes orbit it gently. What remains is a soft, salty-creamy warmth that smells like skin after sun. Not loud anymore.
