The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Space Between takes its name from a philosophical gap, not the destination, not the departure, but the threshold itself. The fragrance explores this idea of transition, of something almost familiar leaving before you can name it. The scent follows Ramble On as part of fūm's body of work, with names like Ariose, Jurassic Flower, and Magnifígue that suggest atmosphere and feeling rather than listing raw materials. The approach asks you to cross over and find out what waits, rather than telling you what to expect. There is a quality of almost-recognition here, the sense that you've encountered this feeling before but cannot place it.
White copal resin anchors the entire structure, a smoke that lifts rather than settles. Around it, contrasts are assembled: apple and petitgrain for aromatic freshness, black tea and shamama saffron attar for bitter complexity, vanilla absolute and Namibian myrrh for warmth that stays close. Each material justifies its presence. The opening introduces these contrasts immediately. Petitgrain's bitter-green quality pushes against the sweetness waiting in the base. Black tea provides a quiet astringency that the incense and copal absorb without erasing. Nothing here drifts.
The evolution
The opening hits quick, apple's fruitiness tempered immediately by petitgrain's bitter-green edge. Neroli slips in quietly, a floral whisper before the copal arrives and shifts the whole register. Thirty minutes in, you're in different territory. The heart is where this fragrance earns its name. Black tea and shamama saffron attar introduce a quiet astringency that the incense and copal absorb without erasing. Vanilla begins its gradual arrival, the sweetness building as the top notes recede. By drydown, you're left with something warm and close, vanilla and myrrh settling into the skin, a trace of smoke that doesn't announce itself. The copal threads through everything, arriving early and leaving last. What remains is a warm, resinous presence that lingers close to the skin, intimate in its persistence.
Cultural impact
Fifteen bottles, hand-numbered. The Space Between represents a limited release from the studio, positioning it as something sought after by those who follow independent fragrance houses operating outside commercial channels. The 2024 debut follows Ramble On, suggesting a measured pace of work from the studio. White copal forms a significant presence in the composition, its smoke providing a foundation that runs throughout the fragrance. The scent explores threshold and transition, ideas that extend from its name into its actual material character.
