    Master Perfumer

    Miss Layla

Miss Layla did not arrive at perfumery through conventional channels. She entered what she calls the "side door" after a career as a professional cook, where her senses developed in kitchens rather than laboratories. Her family noticed something unusual about her as a child: she learned to "taste shapes," an extraordinary synesthetic gift that would later inform her entire creative approach. Rather than pursue formal training, she taught herself the art of compounding, building her knowledge through pure curiosity and hands-on experimentation. Today, she runs Fūm Fragrances from North Hollywood, where she creates without the constraints of commercial fragrance houses. What sets her apart is this freedom, combined with a palate trained by years of professional cooking and a deeply personal connection to scent that most noses never develop. She calls her work the "real job of a perfumer."

    How Miss composes

Cooking shaped Layla's nose in ways traditional perfumery training rarely does. She understands how ingredients behave under heat, pressure, and combination, and this knowledge informs her approach to accords. She gravitates toward raw, tactile materials that carry weight and texture, often building fragrances around resins, woods, and smoke. Her work tends toward the atmospheric, creating scents that feel less composed than discovered. She avoids artifice, preferring natural materials that tell the truth about their origins. The result is perfume that smells genuinely of things, not vaguely of ideas.

    Philosophy

    What drives Miss

Layla creates what she describes as authentic studies of real-world objects, plants, and places. She works from memory and sensation rather than trend forecasts, translating lived experience into liquid form. Her philosophy centers on honesty and specificity: she does not approximate a memory, she reconstructs it. Every fragrance begins as a sensory encounter that moved her, and she pursues that encounter with the rigor of a naturalist and the intuition of an artist. For Layla, perfume is not decoration but documentation, a way of preserving and sharing moments that would otherwise pass unnoticed.
