The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Anne Flipo created a fragrance for Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle built on a foundation of jasmine and ylang-ylang that feels rich and enveloping, the kind of white floral heart that commands attention rather than whispers it. Hyacinth circles around the core, adding a subtle green undertone that keeps the florals from feeling heavy or cloying. Patchouli grounds everything, lending the base an earthy, slightly resinous depth that prevents the composition from floating away. The result has a timeless quality. Modern materials shaped into something that feels both classic and unmistakably of the moment.
Lily of the Valley typically suggests clean, soapy freshness, but here it is paired with basil and blackcurrant to create something sharper and more aromatic. The white florals, hyacinth, jasmine, ylang-ylang, read lush and warm rather than delicate. Patchouli in the base adds an earthy, slightly resinous depth that prevents the whole thing from floating away. The tension between crisp green notes and dense floral warmth is palpable from first spray, and as the fragrance develops on skin, that contrast softens into something cohesive and lingering.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and immediate, basil and blackcurrant create a sharp, dewy quality that doesn't ease you in gently. Lily of the Valley sits cool and green, but there's no soft landing. Within minutes, the white florals take over. Hyacinth adds a slightly narcotic sweetness, jasmine and ylang-ylang arrive lush and almost buttery. The transition isn't gradual, it accelerates. Then patchouli arrives, earthy and grounded, pulling the florals closer to the skin. The drydown stays intimate, close, lasting hours after the initial spray. The paradox resolves: synthetic nature becomes something that smells more alive than real.
Cultural impact
Contemporary culture has returned to past aesthetics more than once, and a fragrance called Synthetic Nature speaks to that conversation. The name itself suggests something deliberate, a meeting point between constructed and organic. The green notes hit with clarity, unapologetic, the kind of boldness that leaves a mark. Over the heart, white florals bloom dense and warm, jasmine and ylang-ylang filling the space with richness that balances the sharpness. Patchouli in the base keeps everything grounded with earthy, slightly resinous depth. The fragrance does not try to resolve the tension between synthetic and natural. It lets both coexist.
