The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Corn Star arrived in 2026 from Fascent, a house that approaches perfume-making with genuine creative appetite. The brief was playful gourmand territory, and perfumer Marine Mercé leaned into it without holding back. Candy fruit, popcorn, marshmallow: a sugar-stacked composition that reads more like a county fair than a perfume counter. The name says it plainly. Corn Star doesn't pretend to be anything other than a sweet, sun-struck composition that knows exactly what it wants to be. On skin, the opening gives way quickly to a softer toasted sweetness, where the marshmallow takes on a warm, almost buttery quality and the popcorn reads as caramelised rather than savoury.
What makes Corn Star worth paying attention to isn't the sweetness. It's the structure underneath it. Angelica and sesame bring a savoury green spine that keeps the candy and marshmallow from collapsing into pure sugar rush. Cypriol at the base adds something smoky and rooty that most gourmand compositions skip entirely. Most candy-forward releases lean on vanilla or caramel for weight. Corn Star uses cypriol and tonka to do that work, which gives the drydown a toasted, almost earthy warmth instead of the usual bakery register. It's a less obvious skeleton for a very obvious-seeming scent.
The evolution
The opening is the loudest part. Candied pear, coconut water, and angelica hit fast and sweet, with a green edge that reads almost like biting into fresh fruit with the skin still on. After about 20 minutes, the marshmallow and popcorn settle in, and the scent shifts from fruit-candy into something softer, toasted, almost like kettle corn cooling on a counter. The sesame threads through the heart without announcing itself, adding a dry, nutty grain that keeps the sweetness honest. The marshmallow thins gradually, the popcorn fades into a warm caramelised whisper, and what remains is a grounded, slightly smoky tonka-cypriol base that pulls the whole composition toward something more grown-up. It's the part most people miss, because the opening grabs all the attention. The drydown is where Corn Star earns its keep.
Cultural impact
Corn Star wears its sweetness on its sleeve. It's bright, playful, unapologetically joyful, allergic to perfumery's usual solemnity, and that directness is part of what makes it land. The composition refuses to dress itself up in the kind of restraint that perfume audiences have come to expect from refined gourmand work. Instead it offers candied fruit, toasted popcorn, and soft marshmallow as a fully realised statement. What keeps it from tipping into pure novelty is the pairing with cypriol and tonka in the base, which grounds the sugar with warmth and a faint smokiness.
