The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mark Evans designed Siberian Fir in 2014. The fragrance moves away from traditional conifer interpretations, seeking something more interior rather than the expected festive route. The concept centered on capturing the true character of a forest setting, exploring the interplay between sharp needle notes and deeper, warmer elements. The composition balances cold, crisp conifer with warm, resinous undertones, creating a fragrance that feels both invigorating and intimate. That tension between sharpness and sweetness, between cold air and warm resin, became the engine of the composition.
The dried fruits are what make this work. Without them, Siberian Fir would be a straightforward conifer, competent, cold, forgettable. The fruits bring a sweetness that should not belong in a forest but somehow does. This restraint shows in how the fruits do not overpower the fir, they complicate it, adding a layer of warmth that keeps the wearer close rather than projecting outward. Benzoin is the structural glue here, sticky, resinous, vanilla-adjacent, and it does the quiet work of making everything hold together.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately. Pine needles and Siberian pine, sharp and cold, with poplar buds adding a green undertone that feels slightly animal, like bark exposed to frost. The transition happens gradually. Dried fruits arrive in the heart, their sweetness tempering the conifer sharpness without erasing it. Benzoin bridges the middle and base, its balsamic warmth softening everything. By the late drydown, woody notes and fir linger as a memory of that initial cold bite, intimate and close, a reminder that the forest was here.
Cultural impact
Siberian Fir occupies a specific space: conifer-focused, yes, but unapologetically complex. This one asks something of the wearer. The dried fruit and benzoin combination is unusual enough that it will not appeal immediately, and that is precisely the point. For those who appreciate fragrance that rewards attention rather than announcing itself, this is a reliable choice. The fragrance stands apart from more accessible fir interpretations, offering depth and complexity for those seeking something beyond the ordinary.
