The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Anne Flipo and Tanguy Guesnet structured Original around a simple idea: clarity over complexity. No elaborate marketing story. Just a fragrance built to work. The composition is built around a pyramid that actually reads on skin instead of disappearing into marketing copy. Bergamot, pink pepper, and cardamom announce arrival with bright, subtly spiced citrus. Clary sage and lavender form the heart, adding herbal depth and aromatic warmth. Sandalwood, patchouli, amber, and tonka bean anchor the base with creamy woodiness, earthiness, and gentle sweetness. The result is a fragrance that knows exactly what it is and never tries to be more. What makes Original interesting isn't any single material. It's the restraint.
The structure is the story. Bergamot and pink pepper create an opening that's bright, clean, with a subtle spice that catches without overwhelming. Cardamom sits already in the top tier, warming the composition from the start. By the time clary sage and lavender arrive in the heart, the composition has already established its character. What makes Original interesting isn't any single material. It's the restraint. The composition uses fewer materials than expected, but each one does exactly what it needs to do.
The evolution
The opening arrives with bergamot leading, bright and immediate. Pink pepper adds a delicate spice that tingles without dominating. Cardamom warms the transition, already present in the top tier. The initial citrus brightness softens gradually as the composition moves into its middle phase. Clary sage and lavender take over the heart, bringing an herbal and aromatic quality that grounds the fragrance without sweetness. The bright citrus notes recede but remain at the edges, keeping the heart from becoming purely linear. This phase carries the fragrance through its core hours. Sandalwood, patchouli, and amber arrive in the drydown, adding warmth and woodiness that rounds everything off. Tonka bean contributes a subtle sweetness that prevents the woods from becoming austere. The warmth deepens slightly as the scent approaches its final hours.
Cultural impact
Lacoste Original launched as a straightforward masculine fragrance with an emphasis on clarity and purpose. The brand positioned the fragrance as accessible, quality without the heritage markup that characterized traditional European houses. The philosophy centered on confidence and authenticity, framing masculine scent as an expression of self rather than grooming ritual. This philosophy shaped Original's structure: confident, clear, no-nonsense. The fragrance found its audience in markets where price and performance mattered more than heritage narrative. Instead of an elaborate marketing story, Original simply delivers what it promises.
