The beginning
Borneo Zen: Trifecta arrives in 2025 as part of Ensar Oud's exploration of layered natural materials, where the name itself signals the intention behind the composition. The fragrance draws on Malayan and Papua oud oils alongside Mongolian, Tibetan, and Tonkin musks, materials drawn from distinct regional traditions and brought together in a single formulation. Jasmine and rose provide the familiar floral scaffolding at the top, their sweetness understated enough to let what lies beneath come forward. The opening carries a quiet, woody warmth, with the florals acting more as texture than statement. Everything underneath belongs to a register built from raw naturals, paced slowly, and assembled with patience. There's no rush in how this composition presents itself.
What sets Trifecta apart is the regional specificity of its base. Malayan oud and Papua oud each bring their own character to the composition, shaped by the terroir and distillation traditions of their respective origins. Layered together, they create a depth that speaks to the difference between regions rather than to any single technique. The musks follow the same principle. The evolution
The opening is woody jasmine with a quiet sweetness and a leather-like undertone, closer to suede than to anything animalic. The jasmine carries a density that suggests the flower rather than a lighter interpretation of it, and there's a soft suede-like grain running underneath that gives the first impression a tactile quality. Honeysuckle rises as the jasmine begins to settle, bringing its own green sweetness into the fold. Malayan oud surfaces underneath the florals, adding an earthy weight that shifts the composition toward something more grounded. Rose arrives shortly after, not as a soliflore but as a thread woven through the white florals, adding warmth without sweetness. The rose feels almost architectural in how it holds the florals together, binding jasmine and honeysuckle into a single gesture. As the composition opens up, the musks begin to assert themselves.
