The beginning
Mean emerged from DOCUMENTS 闻献 as part of Season 01 Human, exploring what it means to be imperfectly, unflinchingly human. The name says it all: a study in contrasts. Resilience and thorns. The English "Mean" paired with the Chinese 柔韧荆棘, flexible thorns, creates a tension the fragrance was built to honor. Yann Vasnier worked with green and aromatic materials to ground a floral heart that might otherwise drift into cliché. The composition favors precision over softness, giving the wearer a sense of clarity without apology.
What makes Mean work is the structural honesty of its construction. Rose typically arrives in a composition draped in sweetness, softness, seduction. Here it arrives differently, backed by coriander's green bite and held down by benzoin's balsamic warmth and vetiver's earth. Peony adds body without adding softness. The result is a rose that functions as architecture rather than ornament. It's a rose that learned to stand up straight.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and clean, coriander and grass cutting through whatever else is in the room. That green freshness holds for the first hour, sharp without being aggressive. Then the rose takes over, not gradually but decisively. Peony joins, lending fullness to the heart, and for the next two to three hours this is a rose-forward fragrance in full command of itself. The drydown is where Mean earns its name. Benzoin and vetiver settle into warmth, but the cumin, quiet all along, begins to show. A skin-close intimacy emerges. Not animalic, not aggressive, but present. The kind of thing someone standing very close might notice. The next morning: faint warmth, the ghost of rose, vetiver still holding ground.

DOCUMENTS 闻献 emerged in 2021 as a Shanghai-based fragrance house. Mean 柔韧荆棘 arrived as part of their Season 01 Human collection. The choice of coriander and rose as lead materials departed from typical Western perfumery associations, where rose often suggests softness and conventional romance. The composition anchors these florals in a green, slightly animalic cumin drydown that shifts the register entirely. This is not a polite arrangement. The fragrance holds its ground through the drydown, refusing to dissolve into something safe and expected.
