The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Michael Paul built Escándalo from something personal: sweet guava and bubblegum-like daisy that feel unexpected in a niche context, while smoky eaglewood anchors the whole composition in something warm and adult. The name itself is a provocation, and the fragrance earns it. This is Bachata translated into scent, a collision of tropical sweetness and resinous depth that pulls the wearer in before they realize what's happening.
The Dominican daisy absolute is the notable presence here. Egletes domingensis brings a distinctive quality to the heart that sets it apart from common white florals, something with character rather than predictability. Paired with jasmine sambac and May rose, the florals lean honeyed and intimate rather than bright or soapy. Vetiver and Orcanox keep the base grounded while agarwood adds smoky, resinous depth. The result is a fragrance that moves from playful tropical sweetness to something that feels like warmth on skin, a transition that feels natural rather than forced.
The evolution
The opening is guava and sweet lime, bright, almost effervescent. Tropical leaves add a green undertone, a reminder of sunlit abundance. The Dominican daisy takes over as the top notes recede. It's soft, slightly powdery, and the bubblegum comparison starts to make sense. Not childish, more like a sweetness you didn't expect to find appealing. The jasmine sambac and May rose bloom next, adding warmth and honey to the florals. The composition feels like it's settling into itself, finding its center. Vetiver keeps things earthy, but the eaglewood is the tell. That's the smoky warmth that anchors everything, the depth that makes the sweetness worthwhile. Orcanox adds a sweet amber quality that threads through the base.
Cultural impact
Escándalo features Dominican daisy absolute, derived from Egletes domingensis, a flower native to Hispaniola. The use of this botanical brings a specific character to the composition that reflects its origins. The fragrance captures sweetness alongside deeper, smokier notes in a way that feels intentional and cohesive.
