The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2012, Davidoff turned its attention to the Pacific Ocean, not a coastline or a memory, but the ocean itself. Its energy and power. The house that revolutionized aquatic fragrance wanted to ask: what does the Pacific smell like? Benoist Lapouza answered with juice and green. Pineapple, melon, mint, tropical sweetness cut with something cold. Bamboo and white florals underneath, quiet and green. The result isn't a beach vacation. It's the smell of open water, somewhere far from the shore.
The interesting move here is the fruit. Most aquatic fragrances lean on marine notes and synthetic ozonics to evoke water. Pure Pacific goes sideways, the opening is almost aggressively fruity. Pineapple that could sunburn your nose. Melon that's been sitting in ice water. Mint to cut through. It's only in the heart that the aquatic element arrives, carried on bamboo. By the base, sandalwood and peach have settled in, warm and close, keeping the whole thing from feeling like a cold shower.
The evolution
The opening doesn't ease you in, it splashes. Pineapple and melon hit cold and immediate, mint sharpening the whole thing before you can settle. Right away this is pure tropical juice, sweet but not soft. The coconut water note adds a subtle brine that keeps things grounded, while the melon brings a watery sweetness that feels genuinely refreshing. Then the aquatic arrives, carried on bamboo. The green note is the real bridge here, moving you from the initial burst into something quieter. White florals, lily of the valley, jasmine, violet, arrive in the heart, softening the composition into something almost powdery. By the base, sandalwood and orris root take over, adding warmth and a hint of powder that stays close to the skin. On clothes, the sandalwood can linger into the next day, faint, warm, a ghost of summer.
Cultural impact
Davidoff's Pure Pacific launched in 2012 as a limited edition exploring what aquatic fragrance could be when filtered through tropical fruit and green bamboo. The fragrance represents a fresh take on the aquatic genre, combining bright tropical notes with aquatic elements to create something that feels both familiar and novel. It's a scent that balances freshness with warmth, offering something distinctive within the aquatic family. The limited edition status gave it an exclusive feel while maintaining the house's signature approachability.
