The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Perfumer Alexandra Carlin built Follow Your Instinct around a single idea: instinct doesn't hesitate. Beckham's own relationship with scent started earlier than most fragrance lines, this was about capturing the moment between decision and action. The brief wasn't for a safe scent. It was for one that committed fully from the opening, with Mandarin Orange and Orange establishing the tone immediately, and the rest of the structure following without reservation.
The note selection reflects deliberate instinct over ornamental layering. Mandarin and Orange create the immediate signal, spiced heart notes deliver warmth and friction, and the drydown anchors everything in earth. Each material exists because it serves the composition. Pairings across the fragrance connect purposefully, with citrus leading into spice and spice grounding into earth. No note overstays its welcome, and no element exists for decoration alone.
The evolution
The fragrance unfolds across three distinct phases of decision-making. First comes the opening, dominated by Mandarin Orange and Orange, arriving without hesitation and making its presence known within minutes. The heart then introduces the spiced middle layer, where Star Anise, Allspice, and Cardamom build an intricate warmth that deepens as the initial citrus settles. Finally, the drydown brings White Amber, Patchouli, and Vetiver into play, grounding the composition in earthy depth that lingers close to the skin for hours. Each phase represents a choice made and honored.
Cultural impact
Designer fragrances occupy a strange space, too dismissed by some, too trusted by others. Follow Your Instinct's value-for-money rating suggests it punches above its perceived weight. The 8.2 score is the highest across all metrics, wearers consistently feel they got more than they expected. The anise note draws strong reactions in either direction, which is rarer in this category than it should be.
