The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Salalah is the southern Omani city the brand calls the paradise of Arabia. Beaches, mountains, the spirit of the desert. Julien Rasquinet, the nose behind this 2023 release, wanted to translate that landscape into scent. The result opens with Turkish rose and plum, the coastal gardens, the humidity in the air, then travels inward through patchouli and deeper still, into the region's most storied material: oud. It's an Arabic fragrance philosophy, recreated for modern wear. Not a recreation of a place. A perfumer's memory of one.
Turkish rose absolute anchors this composition twice, in the heart and the base, which is unusual. Most fragrances use it once, in the opening. Here, it reappears as the heart deepens, richer and more honeyed than the average Damask. The plum note adds a syrupy sweetness that balances the rose's density, creating an almost jammy quality in the opening. The base is where the oud and gurjan balsam relationship becomes interesting. Gurjan balsam brings a fresh, slightly medicinal quality that lifts the oud, preventing it from becoming heavy or one-dimensional. Labdanum then sweetens the whole base, adding warmth without softness. The result is an oud that feels clean, not feral.
The evolution
The opening is immediate. Plum and rose arrive together, the fruitiness softened by the rose's petals, like entering a garden at dusk. Within the first hour, the Turkish rose begins to deepen. Patchouli enters quietly, not loudly, adding an earthy darkness that shifts the whole composition. By the second hour, the oud declares itself. Not shy about it. Gurjan balsam brings a resinous, almost medicinal edge, the kind of freshness that cuts through sweetness without warning. Labdanum wraps around everything, sweet and balsamic, holding the composition together as the hours pass. By the final act, the rose is long gone. But the oud remains, resinous, animalic, close to the skin. On fabric, it lingers for days. On skin, the full arc runs 8-10 hours.
Cultural impact
The Cities Collection from Contes de Parfums has carved a distinct space in the niche market, each fragrance tied to a specific city, each made by a different nose. Salalah stands out within that lineup for its unapologetic use of oud and Turkish rose absolute, a combination that skews warmer and more resinous than the more accessible Dubai opening. The strong sillage and 8-10 hour longevity place it in the bold end of the collection. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves.
