The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
American artist KAWS first entered the fragrance conversation in 2021, approaching Comme des Garçons with a brief rooted in his multi-faceted visual practice. The result was MIRROR, a musky floral that deliberately refused easy categorization. Working with perfumer Nicolas Beaulieu, the collaboration translated KAWS's graphic language into something you could breathe. The bottle, shaped after his iconic COMPANION character, is both concept object and wearable fragrance, leveling the boundary between art and product the way KAWS's work always has. This isn't fragrance as accessory. It's fragrance as statement, made with the house that built its reputation on refusing to play it safe.
The architectural challenge here was making powdery notes feel intentional rather than nostalgic. Beaulieu's solution: anchor the composition in a modern synthetic-musky framework, then let the traditional perfumery materials earn their place. Neroli and Turmeric open bright and slightly bitter, contemporary. Orange Blossom and powdery notes create the creamy floral heart. Cashmeran carries the warmth without tipping into old-fashioned territory. The result is powdery that reads as artistic rather than commercial. This is a fragrance for someone who chooses what speaks to them, not what fills a room.
The evolution
Neroli and Turmeric arrive first, citrus brightness with a herbal undertone that cuts through any ambient smell in the space. Within 15 minutes, the orange blossom and powdery notes take over, creating a creamy floral middle that lasts longest on most skin types. The drydown is where the composition earns its name. Benzoin and Cashmeran settle into a warm, soft musky amber that stays close to skin for the remaining hours. The sillage is moderate, present but never fills a room. It's built for someone who values intimacy over projection. On fabric, it clings quietly and evolves across days, softer each morning.
Cultural impact
Mirror was developed as a concept fragrance, continuing Comme des Garçons's tradition of commissioning artist collaborations rather than commercial products. The KAWS collaboration brought artistic credibility and collector interest to a composition that leans more accessible than some of the house's avant-garde releases.
