The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
V for Men Amber Fougere With Smoky Vetiver arrived in 2017 from Christian Provenzano working within Clive Christian's Private Collection. The brief was straightforward: take the fougère structure, traditionally built on lavender and coumarin, and reimagine it for a modern masculine wearer. Provenzano's answer layered three peppers at the opening, anchored a heart in frankincense that echoed incense rather than florals, and grounded everything in smoky vetiver and warm amber. The result felt less like tradition and more like rebellion within house codes.
The trio of peppers, black, pink, and white, does more than announce the opening. Each variety brings something different to the composition. Black pepper arrives sharp and immediate. Pink pepper softens it slightly, adding a faint berry warmth. White pepper dries it out, preparing the way for what comes next. Together they create an opening that evolves across the first fifteen minutes rather than sitting static. Frankincense becomes the bridge between the bright beginning and the dark ending. Aromatic and slightly balsamic, it doesn't arrive all at once, the frankincense builds gradually, like the smell of incense drifting from another room.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with clear intent. The pepper trio, black, pink, and white, stakes territory immediately, bright and demanding, the bergamot lending a citrus edge that makes the whole thing effervescent. This phase lasts roughly ten minutes before the frankincense begins its slow arrival. By thirty minutes, the composition has shifted. The citrus fades. The incense note builds, not aggressive, but present, taking up space the pepper has started to vacate. The smoke doesn't wait for permission, threading through the composition as the amber warmth builds underneath, creating a base that feels both grounded and luminous. The amber stays warm throughout, never quite taking over, providing sweetness that keeps the smoke from becoming acrid while allowing the vetiver to express its full earthy character.
Cultural impact
V for Men Amber Fougere With Smoky Vetiver joined Clive Christian's Private Collection in 2017. The smoky vetiver and amber combination places it among the house's more distinctive masculine offerings. The vetiver carries a smoky, mineral character that informs the entire composition, from the earliest moments when it provides an earthy counterpoint to the bright pepper opening, to the later stages when it becomes the dominant voice. The smoke doesn't announce itself; it accumulates gradually, becoming present only in the drydown when the brighter notes have faded.
