Why it exists.
The beginning
Bonjour Tendresse translates roughly to "hello, tenderness," a phrase that sets the tone before the first spritz lands. The composition comes from Florian Gallo, a working perfumer at DSM-Firmenich who founded Bontemps Paris as a separate creative project. This 2024 release is his answer to a specific creative brief: a fragrance built around softness as structure rather than softness as decoration. The formula leans on a clean-linen accord built around orris, aldehydes, and elemi, then wrapped in skin-warm musks and frankincense. The opening reads bright and almost soapy, but the resinous backbone pulls it toward something warmer and more grounded.
The aldehydes do the bright, soapy lift that usually belongs to vintage florals, but here they sit alongside Helvetolide, a modern musk molecule that reads as clean laundry rather than clean skin. Italian orris butter brings the powder, and pairing it with Ambroxan and Australian sandalwood grounds the composition in something solid instead of floaty. Philippine elemi adds a green, almost citrusy resin that keeps the aldehydes from going sharp. Helvetolide does double duty, softening the aldehydes while keeping the overall effect freshly laundered rather than perfumey.

The powder settles in, and the aldehydes shift from sharp to shimmering, catching light instead of throwing it. The Ambroxan and Australian sandalwood take over the base, moving the composition from fresh to warm without crossing into gourmand territory. The frankincense surfaces as the hours pass, not smoky but cool, almost mineral in its restraint. Helvetolide keeps everything smelling faintly of clean skin through every phase.
