Le Grand Saut, French for "the big jump," is Florian Gallo's 2024 composition for Bontemps Paris, the perfume house behind the scent. Gallo, whose work is informed by his background as a trained perfumer, crafted this fragrance during a period of growth for the brand. The scent captures the suspended moment before something irreversible happens: the breath taken, the parachute not yet pulled, the warmth of whatever just got left behind. There's a tension running through the composition, a held exhale, a leaning forward into weightlessness. It evokes the physical rush of freefall, the shift in pressure, the way time seems to slow just before a decision becomes permanent.
What makes Le Grand Saut distinctive is its unusual structure. Guatemalan cardamom, French clary sage absolute, and Haitian vetiver form a dry, herbal opening before Colombian coffee and Ivory Coast cocoa arrive. The cardamom contributes a sharp, almost mentholated snap, while the clary sage brings a softer, musky herbal quality that smooths the edges. Vetiver underneath lends an earthy, slightly bitter root note, grounding the composition. The creamy side is held back, almost shy, emerging only after the wearer has been patient.
The evolution
The opening belongs to cardamom and clary sage, sharp, aromatic, almost savory. Then the vetiver threads through, green and earthy, grounding the air before the coffee shows up. Eventually, the warmth settles in: Colombian coffee, cocoa, benzoin. There's nothing burnt or bitter about the coffee note here. The cream and Bourbon vanilla settle in for the long haul, sticky-sweet without being cloying, and the benzoin gives it a faint resinous hum underneath.
