The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
BIC is not a name you expect on a perfume flacon. Night for Women No. 20 is a fragrance from the brand's catalog, conceived as an accessible evening scent for women who wanted something warm and wearable without paying luxury prices. The formulation was developed with Firmenich, one of the world's largest fragrance houses, a collaboration that gave the numbered system of fragrances a consistent, professional construction. Each position in the collection was tuned to a different mood or moment, and No. 20 was placed in the warm, spiced, evening-wear territory of the range. The numbered naming convention itself is worth noting: rather than naming each juice, the brand assigned numbers, and the bottle carries that numerical identity as its primary label.
Night for Women No. 20 sits firmly in the oriental floral category, and its structure reflects a deliberate approach to evening perfumery. Bergamot handles the entrance, brief and bright, a citrus courtesy before the heavier materials arrive. The heart is where the composition makes its statement: carnation provides a spicy floral density, while mimosa and ylang-ylang add a powdery sweetness. Fruity notes soften the floral character. The base is built on warmth, with vanilla and cashmeran creating a soft, woody-amber foundation, and amber and spices rounding out the drydown.
The evolution
The opening is mostly bergamot, quick and clean, almost like a door opening. Then the florals take over. Carnation leads, spicy and slightly peppery, the kind of floral that has texture. Mimosa and ylang-ylang arrive alongside, powdery and golden, with the fruit notes adding a sweet, jammy quality underneath. As the composition develops, the carnation mellows, and the warmer base notes begin their climb. Vanilla emerges first, soft and rounded, followed by cashmeran, which gives the drydown a woody, ambery feel. Amber and spice settle in last, creating a warm, slightly resinous finish that sits close to skin. The way the vanilla and cashmeran interact in the late stages is one of the more interesting features of this composition: the vanilla softens the cashmeran, while the cashmeran gives the vanilla a subtle woodiness that prevents it from reading as simple sweetness.
Cultural impact
Night for Women No. 20 sits within a tradition of oriental florals, a category built around the interplay of spice, sweet florals, and warm resinous bases. Its carnation-amber-vanilla structure places it in conversation with classic evening fragrances that rely on the contrast between spicy heart notes and creamy, sweet foundations. The numbered naming convention is itself a distinctive choice: rather than evoking imagery through poetic names, the brand identifies its juices numerically, letting the scent itself carry the identity. The result is a fragrance that doesn't rely on marketing language or aspirational positioning to make its case.
