The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Beso Canalla arrived in 2018 as part of Beso Beach Perfumes' lineup alongside Beso Negro and Bendito Beso. The name carries an edge: Fragrantica describes it as a bad boy/bad girl kiss, the kind that defies expectations. Where other fragrances in the line might lean into sun-drenched florals or golden hour ease, this one takes a different direction entirely. Annick Ménardo crafted it with saffron's distinctive metallic bite, a sharp and confrontational quality that immediately sets it apart. The gourmand warmth of caramel softens that edge, creating an unexpected harmony. Lavender and neroli work in tandem to keep the composition grounded and approachable, preventing the intensity from becoming unwearable.
The saffron-sandalwood combination is where this separates from typical beach-fragrance territory. Saffron carries a certain luxury shorthand, it reads expensive, Middle Eastern, almost medicinal in its opening. Pair it with Indonesian patchouli and Indian sandalwood, and you've got a base that leans heavily into resinous, almost tactile warmth. The heliotrope adds a powdery dimension that keeps the sweetness from becoming cloying. It's the kind of composition that could only come from someone with Ménardo's experience navigating the line between accessible and interesting.
The evolution
The first five minutes are the test. Saffron arrives sharp and metallic, almost confrontational if you're not expecting it. Bergamot softens the edges just enough to keep it from being aggressive. Then, as the neroli and lavender warm on skin, the opening transforms into something almost gentle. The handoff to the heart is where Beso Canalla earns loyalty. Caramel materializes slowly, threading through the herbal quality of the lavender until the whole composition reads as sweet, warm, and grounded. The heliotrope adds that characteristic powdery softness, think the inside of a cashmere sweater, not baby powder. By hour three, the amber and sandalwood have fully taken over. The patchouli keeps everything slightly earthy, slightly animalic, preventing the sweetness from floating away.
Cultural impact
Beso Canalla brings something distinctive to the niche fragrance landscape through its bold use of ingredients that evoke warmth and sensory richness. Saffron takes center stage, delivering that characteristic metallic bite that grabs attention from the first spray. The lavender note serves as a bridge between contrasting elements, connecting the sharp opening to the sweet heart while maintaining an herbal quality that keeps the composition grounded. This fragrance appeals to those who appreciate complexity in their scents, who want something that reveals new facets as it develops on skin.
