The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Make Me Wonder arrived in 2008 from perfumer Honorine Blanc, one of three summer releases Avon released that year alongside Make Me Smile and Fire Me Up. The composition centers on boysenberry, that hybrid of raspberry and blackberry, as the anchor. Violet and vanilla follow, creating a fruity-floral-warm structure. The fragrance unfolds in stages, offering a layered experience that evolves as the hours pass. Each stage reveals new facets of the scent, moving from the initial berry brightness through floral heart notes to a warm, comforting base. The progression feels natural, each phase building on what came before.
What makes Make Me Wonder interesting is the interplay between tart and sweet. Boysenberry provides a bright, sharp character that sets the initial impression. Violet, as the heart, shifts the composition from fruity to powdery-floral, adding a delicate softness. Vanilla in the base ties everything together, creating a warm, skin-close drydown that keeps the fragrance intimate and close. The progression from one phase to the next reveals how each note contributes to the overall composition.
The evolution
The opening hits tart and bright. Boysenberry leads, sharp and almost jammy, with anise present underneath. Within minutes, the tartness softens. Violet takes over, powdery and floral, replacing the berry's brightness with something gentler. The transition is not dramatic. By the time you reach the drydown, the fruity brightness is gone. What's left is vanilla, musk, and sandalwood. Warm. Skin-close. The scent lingers quietly, present but restrained. The vanilla and musk extend the experience, remaining close to the skin as the fragrance settles into its final form.
Cultural impact
Make Me Wonder arrived as part of Avon's broader fragrance portfolio. The fruity-floral trend dominated the late 2000s market, and this scent embraced that direction while incorporating anise as a distinctive element. Accessible perfumery continued to expand during this period, with fragrances offering sophisticated compositions at price points reachable for a wide audience.
