The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Part of Arcana Craves' 2020 Daydream collection, Strawberries Crave Sunlit Paths turns the brand's signature naming conceit on its head. Where most of the line pairs a familiar edible craving with a mood (Pumpkins Crave Terror, Vanilla Crave Grind Shows), this one sends a strawberry into a forest. The intent reads like a love letter to day-hiking: the basket you bring, the path underfoot, the point where sunlight cuts through the canopy and the berries ripen along the trail. The composition itself feels built from the senses of a long walk through conifer woods in late summer, when the heat pulls sugar from low-growing fruit and the resinous air wraps around everything.
What's unusual here is the structural honesty. The strawberry sits forward, then undercuts it with forest floor, lichen, moss, and oud. The fruit and the woods aren't blended into a hybrid. They're stacked, two registers running parallel, and your nose moves between them depending on the moment. The fir needle opens it like a hike before the sun fully hits, green and sharp, with the resinous snap of a branch pulled aside. The oud and vetiver keep it grounded long after the berry sweetness fades, pulling the whole thing toward earth and bark.
The evolution
The first few minutes are almost entirely fir needle, green and sharp, the resinous snap of breaking a twig. Strawberry arrives early, not as jam or candy but as crushed fruit in your palm, the kind that stains your fingers. Sugar is there, but it reads more like sunlight on the berry than as a separate note, warm and ambient rather than syrupy. As the composition settles, the forest floor emerges: moss, lichen, and that earthy oud undertone that turns the whole thing from sweet to rooted. The strawberry doesn't vanish. It thins, becomes the memory of fruit rather than the fruit itself, while the woods deepen around it, gaining weight and shadow as the bright top notes recede. The drydown is mostly vetiver and oud with a faint sweetness clinging to the edges, like a forest after rain when the air still carries something warm.
Cultural impact
Wears like a day-hike in scent form. The strawberry-and-oud pairing, with fir needle and moss threading through, creates a composition that holds sweetness and earthiness in deliberate balance, neither overpowering the other. The conifer note runs through the entire wear like a current, cooling the fruit and sharpening the oud so neither becomes too soft or too heavy. It's a scent that rewards wearing rather than sniffing from the bottle, revealing more of itself on warm skin than on a test strip. Those drawn to fragrances with a sense of place find a lot to settle into here.
