Why it exists.
The beginning
Marshmallows Burn Down the Yule Tree! arrived in 2017, a seasonal composition from Arcana Craves, the indie label known for translating everyday cravings into small-batch perfume. The house had built its reputation on edible-arcane compositions, Pumpkins Crave Terror, Strawberries Crave Ice Cream, the kind of names that announced themselves with a wink. Marshmallows Burn Down the Yule Tree! treated the food note not as a gateway to whimsy but as the point of ignition. Marshmallows burning. A tree going up in resinous, fragrant ruin. The brand released it as part of its winter rotation, and production has since ended, leaving decants and secondary bottles as the only way in.
The note pyramid reads like an arson report written by a gourmand. Marshmallow and smoke sit at the top of the heart, not as competing elements but as cause and effect. Around them, fir absolute, balsam fir needle, black spruce, Douglas fir, pine, and pine needles stack into a wall of conifer that would smell like a forest if it weren't actively burning. Myrrh and frankincense lend the incense gravity, their cool, resinous facets pushing the composition away from simple gourmand territory and toward something older, more ceremonial.
The evolution
The opening settles in quickly. Sweet marshmallow, the toasted edge of it, rides alongside fir and a clean woodsmoke that hasn't yet decided whether it's a fireplace or a forest fire. You catch the myrrh early, cool and resinous, almost ceremonial in its restraint. The conifers deepen as the accord progresses, balsam fir and Douglas fir thickening the composition into something darker and more tarry, while the smoke shifts and gains character. The marshmallow keeps its sweetness but the context around it grows more austere, more weather-beaten. In the later stages of the wear, you're in full drydown territory: honeyed smoke, waxy beeswax, the dry hum of sandalwood and Atlas cedar, and that unexpected thread of red wine winding underneath everything, fruit turned mulled, turned almost spirit-like.
