The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vanilla has always filled a void for Tanja Bochnig. On difficult days, a sniff of it lifted her spirits. That personal relationship with the note became the seed for Vanilicious. Rather than reaching for a pre-made vanilla accord, Bochnig built a concentrated botanical interpretation using several vanilla extracts from different origins alongside her own in-house vanilla accord. The result is a fragrance that captures the true depth of the vanilla pod, the resinous, almost sticky richness of real beans rather than the sanitized versions found in mainstream perfumery. Each extract contributes its own character, creating layers of sweetness that feel natural and complex rather than flat and predictable.
What sets Vanilicious apart from the crowded vanilla market is its refusal to be just sweet. The addition of blond tobacco and precious woods introduces dry, hay-like facets that cut through the creaminess. Peru balsam adds a balsamic resinous quality that deepens the composition beyond simple gourmand territory. The result is a vanilla that smells like the actual vanilla bean, sticky, dark, boozy, rather than a synthetic approximation. This is vanilla as it exists in nature, concentrated and honest, working with woody and tobacco notes rather than hiding behind sugar.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with the rich, dark scent of real vanilla beans, resinous, gooey, and boozy. Tonka bean enters quickly, smoothing the edges and adding coumarin warmth without tipping into dessert territory. The composition is carefully balanced so that the vanilla remains the dominant character throughout the wear, supported by the other materials rather than overwhelmed by them. The overall effect is one of warmth and depth, with the confectionery notes grounding the fragrance and preventing it from becoming too lightweight or ephemeral. The vanilla stays present and recognizable, evolving subtly as the hours pass but never losing its essential identity. The fragrance maintains its character from first spray to final fade, offering a consistent aromatic experience that honors the beauty of the raw material.
Cultural impact
Vanilla has long been a polarizing note in perfumery, often dismissed as predictable or relegated to background sweetness in blends. April Aromatics approaches this familiar material with fresh eyes, emphasizing its natural complexity rather than treating it as a simple comfort note. The fragrance community has shown growing interest in botanical authenticity, with many seeking out interpretations that honor the raw material's true character. Vanilla's versatility allows it to serve as both a foundation and a focal point, depending on how it is composed and positioned.
