Tanja Bochnig
Tanja Bochnig grew up in Berlin with a nose that never stopped asking questions. As a child she catalogued the scent of rain on cobblestones, the perfume of fresh‑baked bread, and the aroma of her grandmother’s herb garden. At eighteen she stepped onto fashion runways, a world that taught her how scent can amplify mood and memory. A chance encounter with a Buddhist natural perfumer, Alec Lawless, redirected her path. Under his mentorship she learned the chemistry of essential oils and the discipline of intuitive composition. After years of travel across India, Morocco and the Andes, she returned to Berlin and launched April Aromatics, a boutique house that offers handcrafted, all‑natural fragrances. Her first public release, The Preciousss, arrived in 2015 and earned praise for its unapologetic honesty. Since then she has built a loyal clientele who seek scents that heal as much as they enchant.

How Tanja composes
Tanja’s signature technique centers on minimalistic layering. She often builds a base of resinous amber or vetiver, then adds a single floral or herb note that rises without competing. Essential oils dominate her palette; she favors sustainably sourced rose, sandalwood, and Indian rain‑kissed teak. When a fragrance calls for depth, she introduces a touch of frankincense or myrrh, allowing the composition to breathe. She prefers cold‑press extraction for citrus and steam distillation for delicate florals, preserving the original nuance. Each bottle emerges from a process that balances scientific precision with intuitive feeling.
Philosophy
What drives Tanja
Tanja believes that fragrance should act as a quiet therapist, a daily ritual that steadies the mind. She treats each oil as a conversation partner, listening for the subtle shifts that reveal a scent’s true character. Her work begins with a feeling—a calm after rain, the breath of a forest at dusk—and she translates that into a formula that respects the raw material’s integrity. She avoids fleeting trends, preferring instead to let the natural profile of each ingredient dictate the structure. For her, the act of blending is an act of mindfulness, a practice that aligns body, scent, and intention.
