The Story
Why it exists.
Inspired by Mark Rothko's contemplative beige and white monochromes, perfumer Violaine Collas set out to create a leather fragrance stripped of all traditional heaviness and animalic weight. She envisioned something radically pure, contemporary, and weightless, a fragrance that would challenge everything we expect from leather. The Indian summer became her muse, that golden transitional moment when the heat of day yields to the cool freshness of evening, captured in olfactory form through dancing materials that circle one another in perfect harmony.

The Beginning
Inspired by Mark Rothko's contemplative beige and white monochromes, perfumer Violaine Collas set out to create a leather fragrance stripped of all traditional heaviness and animalic weight. She envisioned something radically pure, contemporary, and weightless, a fragrance that would challenge everything we expect from leather. The Indian summer became her muse, that golden transitional moment when the heat of day yields to the cool freshness of evening, captured in olfactory form through dancing materials that circle one another in perfect harmony.
When it launched in 2018 as part of BDK's Collection Matières, Crème de Cuir immediately redefined what leather could be in modern perfumery. The fragrance found immediate resonance among perfume enthusiasts seeking sophistication without overwhelming heaviness, offering proof that leather could whisper rather than shout. It demonstrated that this most ancient of fragrance materials could be rendered airy, transparent, and perfectly suited for daylight wear.
The Evolution
The fragrance unfolds like colors bleeding across a Rothko canvas, each note emerging in soft focus before gracefully yielding to the next. Bright pineapple and Italian bergamot sparkle in the opening, creating immediate intrigue with their unexpected freshness. The heart reveals white suede and creamy sandalwood in perfect equilibrium, while pink pepper adds subtle warmth without spice. Hours later, what remains is a clean skin-scent of modern musks, vanilla absolute, and birch that clings close for hours, intimate and personal.
Cultural Impact
Helped popularize the 'clean leather' or 'white leather' category alongside fragrances like Daim Blond and Silver Leather. It proved leather could be airy, modern, and daytime-appropriate rather than exclusively nocturnal and heavy. The fragrance has become a reference point for those seeking leather fragrances that work in professional settings and warm weather, demonstrating that the category could evolve beyond its traditional associations with darkness, smoke, and intensity. It remains one of BDK's most beloved creations.

Think Air-style French electronica. Crème de Cuir needs something airy, slightly synthetic, effortlessly cool. The kind of track that plays in a minimalist Paris apartment while golden hour hits the white walls.
