The Story
Why it exists.
Old School Bench was conceived in 2014 as part of MiN NEW YORK’s prolific “Scent Stories” batch that also birthed Dahab, Momento and Magic Circus. The name evokes the worn wooden benches of Manhattan’s art schools, where students sharpen pencils, scrape charcoal and swap ideas over coffee. Chad Murawczyk wanted a fragrance that captured that gritty creativity, the smell of fresh graphite and the lingering hum of a studio after hours.

The Beginning
Old School Bench was conceived in 2014 as part of MiN NEW YORK’s prolific “Scent Stories” batch that also birthed Dahab, Momento and Magic Circus. The name evokes the worn wooden benches of Manhattan’s art schools, where students sharpen pencils, scrape charcoal and swap ideas over coffee. Chad Murawczyk wanted a fragrance that captured that gritty creativity, the smell of fresh graphite and the lingering hum of a studio after hours.
The composition leans on a bright trio of Angelica root, Bergamot and Lemon, giving a herbal‑citrus spark that feels like a fresh sketchbook page. At its heart, Wood wax and Cocoa mingle with Geranium and a splash of Rum, echoing the warm resin of a varnished easel and the boozy toast of late‑night studio sessions. The base grounds the piece with Patchouli, Vetiver, Cedarwood and a whisper of Vanilla, turning the memory into a smoky, earthy finish that lingers like dried charcoal on a bench.
The Evolution
The opening bursts with lemon’s zing and bergamot’s bright edge, instantly cutting through Angelica’s green, almost medicinal bite. Within ten minutes the waxy glow of wood wax appears, softened by cocoa’s bittersweet richness, while geranium adds a floral sharpness and rum injects a warm, boozy depth that feels like a quiet toast in a dim studio. As the heart settles, the smoky undertones emerge, and the base of patchouli, vetiver and cedarwood begins to anchor the scent, the vanilla whisper softening the drydown. By the hour‑mark the composition settles into a dry, earthy wood that clings to skin, the rum’s warmth fading but leaving a subtle resinous trail that can be sensed on the sleeve long after the day ends.
Cultural Impact
Since its 2014 debut, Old School Bench has become a cult favorite among fans of urban‑inspired niche scents. Wearers often cite its smoky‑woody character as a soundtrack to late‑night studio sessions, and it frequently appears alongside Timbuktu in discussion threads as a modern take on smoky chypre. Its blend of rum‑spiced heart and earthy base has earned it a reputation as the go‑to fragrance for creatives seeking a scent that feels both gritty and refined.
