The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The 43rd National Day of the United Arab Emirates called for something worthy. Widian turned to turpentine oud, the kind that once moved along caravan routes connecting East and West. Ali Aljaberi and Jean-Claude Astier built the composition around this single prized material, making it present from the first moment rather than burying it in the base. Six hundred pieces. Each one a small monument to what oud can do when it's given room to speak.
Cashmere wood and oud don't take turns in VII. They share the stage from opening to drydown, which means the fragrance never really shifts, it's one sustained chord of warmth and resin. Cedar arrives in the heart to add a dry, pencil-shaving sharpness, but it doesn't compete. It's texture, not contrast. White musk and amber close the composition, but they soften rather than transform. The result is a fragrance that behaves like a single long note rather than a melody. Some call this unified. Others call it linear. Both are right.
The evolution
The opening is oud and cashmere together, resinous, slightly animalic, with that signature Widian warmth that feels native to skin rather than layered on top. Cedar arrives shortly after, adding a dry woodiness that keeps the oud from becoming too heavy. The composition then settles: amber and white musk begin to surface, wrapping around the oud and cedar like a second skin. This is the fragrance's most wearable phase, presence without projection, warmth without weight. As time passes, the oud recedes gradually, leaving behind a soft, powdery trail of cashmere and musk that clings to fabric. After a moderate sillage period, only a faint warmth remains, the ghost of amber and white musk, intimate and close. The fragrance lasts a workday with moderate sillage, never demanding attention but always announcing presence.
Cultural impact
As Widian's debut, VII established the house's position: contemporary Oriental confidence without apology. It arrived in late 2014 as a limited run of 600 pieces. For many wearers, VII remains the introduction to what Widian means. The fragrance represented a bold statement of intent from a new house, one willing to embrace the richness of Oriental perfumery without hedging or apology. Its limited availability added to its appeal, making it a sought-after piece for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciated its distinctive character and unapologetic embrace of traditional materials.
