The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Monstre Noir arrived in 2025 as the latest from Tsovak Voskanian. Previous releases carried titles borrowed from philosophy and literature: Beyond Good and Evil, The Wanderer and His Shadow, Ecce Homo. Monstre Noir, French for Black Monster, continues that tradition of naming. The fragrance opens with a sharp metallic precision that cuts through expectation, aldehydes crackling against synthetic graphite like static electricity. Steel dust and powdered metal create an industrial signature that is immediate and uncompromising. Grapefruit arrives citrus-clean, adding brightness that prevents the opening from becoming one-note cold. Smoke establishes itself alongside the metal, and tropical fruits appear in the heart, bringing unexpected sweetness that hints at warmth beneath the surface.
What makes Monstre Noir distinctive is its handling of metallic notes. Aldehydes crackle in the opening like a current running through exposed wiring. Synthetic graphite and powdered steel arrive together, the scent of machines waking, not the smell of a perfumer showing off. This is an aromatic fragrance that takes its industrial references seriously. Tropical fruits appear in the heart, providing a small breath of warmth before the drydown pulls everything toward ambergris and vanilla.
The evolution
The opening of Monstre Noir makes an immediate impression. Aldehydes crackle and synthetic graphite announces itself, followed closely by smoke. The composition reads like standing inside a working industrial space. Grapefruit surfaces with citrus-sharp precision, cutting through the graphite in a way that adds dimension rather than softening the effect. It introduces brightness to the same industrial context. Tropical fruits emerge as the heart develops, drifting through the smoke like a signal from somewhere warmer. The drydown belongs to ambergris and vanilla, and this is where the fragrance shifts significantly. What was sharp becomes smooth, and the character of the scent transforms as softer notes take precedence. The rubber note lingers last, serving as a quiet anchor to the scent's origin.
Cultural impact
Monstre Noir appeared at Pitti Fragranze 2025. The fragrance's industrial references, metal, smoke, rubber, place it within a broader conversation in niche perfumery about synthetic materials and what they communicate. The house has taken a direction with this release that prioritizes character over crowd-pleasing appeal, presenting something that demands attention rather than asking for it. Monstre Noir stands as a statement of intent from a creative voice that seems uninterested in playing it safe.
