The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Les Saisons Été arrived in 2004 as part of a collection that treated seasons as something to wear, not just survive. Francis Kurkdjian built it around a tension: the cool clarity of aldehydes against the warm sweetness of blackberry. Summer understood as the moment before everything ripens, hot, but still held in balance. The name says warm weather, but the composition stays refreshing. That's the trick of it.
The structure places aldehydes first, they open like a bell, lifting everything clean and bright. Then blackberry enters, not as jam but as something tart, almost green. Lily of the valley and cyclamen add that watery, slightly metallic floral quality that keeps the composition from going heavy. Cassia, related to cinnamon but sharper, almost anise-adjacent, sneaks in as the surprise. Cedar at the base keeps it dry. The whole thing reads as cool even in heat, which is harder to achieve than it sounds.
The evolution
Aldehydes hit first, a spark of clean that clears the air in seconds. The bergamot underneath adds citrus sparkle before blackberry arrives around minute five, tart and bright against the soapy aldehydic lift. The transition isn't dramatic. It's like watching clouds move on a summer afternoon. Lily of the valley takes over the heart, green and delicate, with cyclamen adding a slight peppery nuance. Then cedar and the aldehydes that somehow never fully disappear, they linger into the drydown, keeping the whole composition cool even as the berry fades. The drydown itself is intimate, close to the skin, woody and quiet. It doesn't announce itself. But it stays for 4-6 hours depending on skin.
Cultural impact
Les Saisons Été occupies a particular space, fresh enough for summer, elegant enough for a workday, aldehydic enough to feel classical but fruity enough to feel modern. Francis Kurkdjian is known for compositions that balance accessibility with artistry, and this fits that pattern. It's not a statement fragrance. It's the kind of scent that earns compliments from people who know.
