The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Born in Roma Coral Fantasy arrived in 2022 as part of Valentino's Born in Roma collection. The perfumer Nadège Le Garlantezec composed this Donna variant, and the result is a fragrance that pushes fruit into territory it rarely occupies in mainstream perfumery. Brazilian orange opens with radiant, sun-warmed brightness, while the base of white musk and ambrette seed absolute keeps the composition grounded and clean. The juice avoids the traps of typical fruity launches: no syrupy sweetness, no flat single-note simplicity. Instead, it layers juicy top notes against a musky, slightly skin-like drydown, giving the scent a dimensional quality that rewards attention. The overall effect is polished yet approachable, the kind of fragrance that announces itself without shouting.
What makes this composition worth noticing is the kiwi-orange pairing at the top. Golden kiwi functions as a bridge between juicy sweetness and something more tart and sophisticated. Brazilian orange provides the radiant lift, while jasmine auriculatum anchors the heart with depth. The base stays deliberately clean: white musk and ambrette seed absolute create warmth without weight. The restraint is the statement. The fruit notes never feel like decoration; they're structural, setting up a fragrant architecture that the florals and musks complete.
The evolution
The opening is all fruit. Golden kiwi arrives bright, almost sharp, layered with Brazilian orange that reads more like zest than juice. It's sweet but not cloying, the kind of opening that makes you double-check whether you're smelling perfume or actual fruit on a warm day. Rose enters softly, slightly dewy, followed by jasmine auriculatum, which carries an indolic warmth that some will read as sensual and others as slightly soapy. Together they temper the fruit into something more grown-up. As the composition settles, the kiwi becomes a memory, a sweetness that lingers at the edges rather than leading. White musk arrives quietly in the background, and ambrette seed absolute adds a soft, musky warmth with a slightly nutty, almost fig-like undertone. The drydown is clean and skin-close. Over time, white musk takes on greater presence, with traces of jasmine still glowing beneath it.
Cultural impact
Coral Fantasy sits within Valentino's Born in Roma Donna lineup, a series that includes several bestselling flankers built around the original Donna DNA. Its bright fruity-floral character reads as wearable and accessible, expanding the collection's reach to those who might find some of the deeper, smokier variants too intense. The campaign, fronted by Adut Akech and Anwar Hadid, reflects the brand's ongoing investment in casting that resonates across cultures and generations. Among similar scents, it shares territory with other bright fruity compositions on the market, though its ambrette-musk base gives it a distinct finish.
