The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Scherma launched in 2017 as part of Tuttotondo's sports-inspired line, a collection that draws its narrative from athletic references and the specific moment each discipline captures. This one takes its name from fencing, specifically that charged instant before a touch is scored. The source describes this as the fascinating moment when the fencer is about to perform his winning thrust, a split-second of total commitment where everything hangs on a single extension. That concept shaped every choice in the composition. Nutmeg opens with a dry, almost cold heat, the kind that tightens focus and clears the air around the wearer. Black saffron arrives right behind it, leathery and metallic, carrying the sharp mineral character that defines the opening. These are not comforting spices.
What makes Scherma distinctive is its refusal to soften the leather. White leather in the heart and leather in the base stack rather than dissolve, supported by cedarwood that adds structure without warmth. The construction keeps the material honest, letting the animalic edge speak for itself rather than burying it under contrasting accords. Ylang-ylang is the surprise. Where most floral notes would round off the composition, here it sharpens it.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are taut and forward. Saffron and nutmeg hit with a metallic edge, almost peppery, cutting through any ambient scent with the precision of a blade finding its line. Geranium floats just above, adding a faint green roughness that keeps the spices from going sweet. There is nothing soft here yet, just a controlled aggression that announces itself before settling in. Around the 30-minute mark, ylang-ylang and white leather take over. The floral note is restrained, more about texture than sweetness, and it sits against the leather with a quiet friction that defines the heart of the composition. Cedarwood anchors the middle, giving the composition a dry backbone. The metallic quality softens but never fully leaves, lingering as a distant reminder of the opening's intensity.
Cultural impact
Scherma occupies an unusual corner: a sport-inspired leather composition from a brand whose other references lean toward herbal and regional Italian territory. That contrast is part of its appeal. Wearers tend to be people who already know what they want from a leather fragrance and want something drier and more disciplined than the usual options in the category. The fencing reference adds a layer of intentionality. This is not a background scent. It reads as chosen, specific, the kind of fragrance that signals an attention to detail without shouting about it.
