The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Thomas de Monaco's Raw Gold Extrait de Parfum returns to the concept of the original with a different question: what if you pushed it further? Where the initial Eau de Parfum presented a complete statement, this interpretation seeks to deepen the conversation. The fragrance maintains the spirit of its predecessor while charting a distinct course through material and sensation. Concentration shifts, projection evolves, longevity finds new expression. Same name, different substance. The extrait builds on the foundation rather than merely amplifying it, finding its own identity within the framework of the original. What emerges is something that feels both familiar and surprising, carrying the memory of the first while establishing its own presence on the skin.
The choice to build around orris absolute and davana oil isn't accidental. Orris, derived from iris rhizomes that take three years to develop, brings a powdery sweetness that's almost waxy, something between violet and carrot. Davana adds a herbal, slightly bitter edge that prevents the composition from becoming cloying. Together, they create an opening that smells expensive before the leather even arrives. Saffron at the base isn't just warmth, it's the link between the cool iris and the warm vanilla, holding the structure together like a thread.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to orris and cedar. A sharp, almost medicinal clarity opens things up, then davana's herbal warmth softens the edges. This is where most people decide, the transition is smooth, but it asks something of you. By the half-hour, suede takes over. Not harsh leather, soft, worn suede, warm and intimate. Patchouli and guaiac wood layer underneath, adding earthiness without darkness. Then the vanilla arrives. It doesn't rush. It builds slowly, meeting the benzoin somewhere around the second hour, and from there the drydown becomes something that breathes. On the skin the scent continues to evolve, revealing new facets as hours pass. The next morning there's still a warmth on the skin, faint but present, the ghost of what was. Each wearing seems to unlock something new in the composition, making the fragrance feel different even on repeated encounters.
Cultural impact
Raw Gold Extrait de Parfum occupies a distinctive position among contemporary fragrances, where leathery-orientals and iris-vanilla pairings have become familiar territory. What distinguishes this scent is the quality of execution, the way familiar materials are assembled into something that feels both grounded and unexpected. The composition works through suggestion rather than declaration, letting the wearer discover its depths over time. It's a fragrance that rewards attention, revealing new aspects with each encounter.
