The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Non Binary came out of a simple premise: what if a fragrance wore the way identity actually feels, fluid, self-defined, unconstrained by someone else's categories? The Greek Perfumer released it as a Gay Pride special edition in 2024, though the name alone makes clear this isn't a seasonal product or a trend-chasing gimmick. It's a position statement in a bottle. The composition opens with bright pineapple sweetness that arrives alongside coffee bean's rich, roasted character. There's a natural warmth that carries through from the first spray, with a spice note that adds depth without dominating. As it develops on skin, the initial brightness settles into something more intimate, and the blend maintains its character without ever feeling predictable or constrained by expectations.
What makes Non Binary interesting as a composition is its layered construction. Coffee and pineapple appear together in the opening, with pineapple's tropical sweetness and coffee's bitter depth present simultaneously. Cardamom adds a warm, slightly peppery quality that connects these two notes. In the heart, lily of the valley contributes floral elements while cinnamon brings spice. The base combines tonka bean's sweet, vanillic character, rum's warmth, and Palo Santo's woodiness.
The evolution
The opening arrives fast, pineapple sweetness upfront, coffee bean's roasted character right behind it. For the first thirty minutes, it's bright and a little unexpected. Cardamom keeps things warm underneath, adding a subtle spice that threads through the tropical-floral opening. Then the heart takes over: lily of the valley's florals arrive to add a cool, green quality, and cinnamon brings a warm spiced note that complements the existing sweetness. As the top notes fade, the heart deepens before giving way to the base. The drydown is where Non Binary settles into itself. Tonka bean brings that sweet, vanillic creaminess that lingers. Rum adds warmth, contributing an alcohol-forward quality without additional sweetness. Palo Santo grounds everything with its clean, smoky woodiness that provides a dry, resinous finish.
Cultural impact
Non Binary landed in 2024 as a Gay Pride special edition, but its appeal extends beyond the occasion. The fragrance combines sweet rum with tropical fruit notes and white florals, creating a blend that balances warmth and brightness. Coffee and pineapple open the scent with a distinctive character that sets it apart from more straightforward sweet fragrances. The addition of cardamom adds depth, while lily of the valley brings floral softness to the heart. The base features tonka bean's creaminess alongside Palo Santo's woody warmth. The composition presents as warm and slightly sweet, offering both sweetness and depth in equal measure.
