The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Dua Brand launched Spice From The East in 2020, composed by perfumer Mahsam Raza. The scent was inspired by the rich, sweet creaminess of ripe dates at harvest, capturing the moment when their fragrance fills the surrounding air. A creamy amber base, paired with smooth sandalwood, anchors the composition and gives it that dessert-adjacent warmth, a sweetness that feels sun-warmed and almost edible without crossing into gourmand territory. The result is an oriental floral that carries the depth of Middle Eastern perfumery into a modern extrait de parfum, presented as part of the brand's Inspired Expression collection.
The note list reveals a composition steeped in Middle Eastern perfumery traditions. Saffron, frankincense, incense, and cedar establish a resinous and woody foundation. Jasmine, rose, and geranium bring the floral backbone familiar to this style of perfumery, adding depth and a slight powdery texture. Patchouli and sandalwood supply a smooth, creamy base that grounds the brighter elements. Artemisia adds a bitter, herbal edge that prevents the sweetness from tipping into confection.
The evolution
The opening arrives with saffron and bergamot cutting through jasmine's headier sweetness, almost sharp enough to taste. Bergamot provides a brief citrus lift before the composition settles into something drier and more herbal. Soon after, jasmine and rose settle into a denser floral heart, while incense begins threading smoke through the petals. This is where the fragrance commits to its character: warm, resinous, faintly liturgical. As the hours pass, the florals recede, and sandalwood and amber take over. The scent becomes creamier, almost lactonic, with patchouli grounding the base and cedar adding a clean, dry woodiness underneath. On skin, the drydown holds well, leaving a soft amber-woody trail. What lingers is the memory of dates and incense, sweet but never cloying, smoky but never harsh.
Cultural impact
Spice From The East sits within The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. Sources note that it smells similar to Widian's Liwa Extrait de Parfum, placing it in proximity to Arabian Peninsula-inspired niche perfumery that has gained traction in recent years. Wearers who gravitate toward oriental florals with creamy, resinous drydowns will find familiar territory here. The saffron-jasmine-amber combination marks it as unmistakably warm-weather-adjacent, better suited to transitional and cold months than summer heat.
