The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sophisticated landed in 2021 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, the house's ongoing project of reconstructing beloved high-end compositions. The reference here is unmistakable: Chanel's Coromandel, one of the Les Exclusifs pieces. The Dua Brand's approach with this release is faithful to that lineage, preserving the white chocolate-orris interplay, the smoky benzoin, and the incense haze that made the original a piece worth knowing. The Inspired Expression collection exists to do exactly this kind of work, taking compositions that have earned their reputation and offering them through a different lens. Sophisticated sits comfortably in that mission, a reconstruction that doesn't apologize for what it borrows and doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is.
The unusual move here is white chocolate as a structural heart note rather than a fleeting novelty. White chocolate in a composition like this could easily collapse into sugar syrup or edible sweetness, but here it persists, threaded through orris root's powdery iris depth, creating a dry, almost chalky sweetness that anchors the entire composition. There's a confectionery quality that never quite tips over into confection, the cocoa butter side of white chocolate showing up as texture rather than taste.
The evolution
The opening moves fast. Bitter orange and neroli flash for the first 10 to 15 minutes, bright enough to register but not so sharp they announce themselves. Almost immediately, the white chocolate arrives, and it's not shy. Creamy, slightly lactic, layered against orris root's cool powder. The contrast is disorienting in a good way, like walking into a room where someone left the window open in winter. The heart settles into a slower rhythm around the 30-minute mark. Tahitian vanilla warms up, the jasmine sambac and rose surface briefly to add a soft floral texture, and the incense begins its long climb. Patchouli arrives underneath, earthy and grounded, preventing the composition from floating away into pure sweetness. The drydown is where Sophisticated earns its name. After 3 to 4 hours, the benzoin and frankincense take over fully, and what remains is a warm, resinous close that clings to fabric and skin. It doesn't fade so much as it concentrates. The next morning, you'll catch it on a sweater collar, quieter, almost meditative.
Cultural impact
Sophisticated sits in an interesting cultural space. It's a recreation of a Chanel Les Exclusifs composition, a collection that has long carried weight among fragrance enthusiasts, and the recreated version offers a way to experience that territory at a different price point. For people who've encountered Coromandel through a decant, a sample, or simply through reading about it, having a full bottle option in that register changes the relationship with the original.
