The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Reins of the Steed arrived as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a catalog built around reimagining high-end compositions at accessible prices. This one draws its energy from Chariot by Boadicea the Victorious, a luxury house known for armored, resin-heavy compositions. The Dua Brand's approach translates that opulence into their own language: a sprawling note pyramid stacked with enough material to keep your nose busy for hours. Lime, blackcurrant, red berries, and bergamot hit first, with rose, cherry blossom, cardamom, and nutmeg warming underneath. Then the heart blooms into tuberose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, and saffron, with oud threading quietly through the florals.
What makes this composition interesting is its refusal to pick a lane. Most fragrances build around three or four central materials. This one strings together two dozen, from cherry blossom and freesia to papyrus and patchouli, and the structure only holds because the base materials are doing the heavy anchoring. Oud, sandalwood, benzoin, vanilla, and musk create a resinous-sweet foundation strong enough to support everything else without collapsing into muddiness. The fruity opening of red berries, blackcurrant, and apple isn't decoration. It's a deliberate bridge between the bright citrus of bergamot, lime, and neroli and the spiced florals that follow.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes feel almost mischievous. Lime and bergamot cut through the top with a bright, citric snap, then blackcurrant and red berries land with a tart, almost candy-like sharpness that gives way to the first whisper of rose and cherry blossom. Cardamom and nutmeg warm underneath, adding a spiced, lightly powdered edge that keeps the opening from feeling like a simple fruit bowl. By the thirty-minute mark, the composition shifts into its florals, and tuberose, jasmine, and ylang-ylang make their entrance, creamy and slightly indolic, with saffron threading gold through the heart. The oud arrives quietly here, more atmospheric than assertive, a smoky undertone rather than a centerpiece. The middle hours are where the resins take command. Benzoin, vanilla, and sandalwood build a sweet, balsamic warmth that feels like the air after a long fire, sticky and slow-moving.
Cultural impact
Reins of the Steed leans hard into the maximalist end of fragrance, the kind of composition that refuses to apologize for its own density. Its sprawling note pyramid, packed with fruits, florals, resins, woods, and a quiet oud thread, positions it firmly within the resin-forward, unapologetic corner of the market. The fruity-oud character gives it a recognizable shape, sweet and tart up top, smoky and balsamic at the base, with enough body to stand out next to cleaner, skin-focused releases.
