The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Origins of Santal's Chariot Attar takes its cue from somewhere quiet and old. A sandalwood forest, not as a backdrop but as a presence. The Dua Brand built this 2023 release for the man who finds peace in places that don't ask for his attention. Bergamot and mandarin open with a clean citrus lift, bright and fleeting, while juniper, apple, coriander, and ginger layer underneath, evoking leaves moving in still air. The cool zest settles quickly, making room for the herbal florals that follow, violet, jasmine, rosemary, orange blossom, lavender, a deliberate underbrush of scent woven through the spice. Cardamom and sandalwood deepen the picture, and tonka bean with vanilla warm what would otherwise read cool.
What's interesting here is the sheer density of the formula. Twenty-two notes make up this composition, a deliberate layering that mirrors the biodiversity of the forest it's painting. The spicy aromatics, cardamom, ginger, coriander, pepper, don't fight the florals. They scaffold the row, giving the violet and jasmine and orange blossom something to climb. The woods work in tiers too. Guaiac wood and cedar add dry heat alongside sandalwood, each pulling a different kind of warmth from the others.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the spices. Juniper and coriander hit crisp and green, with ginger adding that clean burn, the sensation of cracking open a fresh stem. Bergamot and mandarin orange lift everything off the skin with a fleeting citrus brightness that disappears almost as soon as you register it. Cardamom rounds it out, warm and slightly sweet, and the whole effect reads brisk, almost architectural. As the citrus fades, the heart settles in. The florals arrive quietly, orange blossom and jasmine threading through the spice, but it's the sandalwood that takes over. Creamy and full, it sits at the center of the composition, supported by tonka bean and vanilla underneath. Musk drifts in at the edges, the soft, skinlike warmth, not the sharp kind.
Cultural impact
Origins of Santal's Chariot Attar wears like a statement of intent: someone who knows what sandalwood should smell like, and has an opinion about it. The release leans hard into the warm, spice-and-woods territory that has found a steady audience among fragrance enthusiasts, those collectors and wearers who gravitate toward compositions built around depth rather than brightness. The 2023 release sits in conversation with a growing category of sandalwood-forward fragrances that treat the note as a centerpiece rather than a supporting player, building everything else, the florals, the resins, the spice, in service of that creamy, woody core.
