The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Origins of Santal arrived in 2020 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. The reference point is clear: this is a sandalwood composition in the lineage of Creed's Original Santal, rebuilt from the ground up. Origins of Santal sits comfortably in that catalog, taking Mysore sandalwood as its center of gravity and building outward with citrus, spice, and resin. The sandalwood here reads as the real thing, creamy and dense, with that unmistakable lactonic quality that gives the wood its almost edible warmth. Around it, the supporting notes have room to breathe. The citrus opens with brightness and snap, the ginger brings a clean bite that warms without overwhelming, and the resinous base folds everything into a soft, sweet finish. The name does what it says.
Mysore sandalwood is prized for its creamy, almost milky warmth and a density that holds a composition together. The citrus and spice keep the wood from going heavy or static, lifting the top with brightness before the sandalwood settles into its natural gravity. Siam benzoin and vanilla add a low sweetness that doesn't compete with the sandalwood's natural depth. Instead, they cushion it, giving the base a rounded softness that feels deliberate rather than accidental.
The evolution
The opening is all citrus and lift. Sicilian lemon, peppermint, and orange tree absolute create a clean, almost sparkling top that has no business being this bright over sandalwood. The brightness doesn't last, but it doesn't vanish either. It folds. Ginger and pink pepper start to register early, bringing a clean heat that sits just under the skin rather than on top of it. There is a quiet moment where the spices and the citrus coexist, neither one dominating, and that brief equilibrium is one of the more interesting passages in the wear. The Mysore sandalwood takes the lead not long after, and this is where the composition earns its name. The wood is creamy, slightly powdery, with a warmth that feels like it's been there all along. It doesn't announce itself; it just becomes the temperature of the air around you.
Cultural impact
Origins of Santal occupies a specific corner of the fragrance conversation, and its reference to Creed's Original Santal is widely noted among wearers. The translation holds up particularly well in the drydown, where the sandalwood and vanilla do their best work, offering a creamy, resinous finish that echoes the original's most beloved qualities. The fragrance appeals to someone who wants a sandalwood-forward oriental that wears well across seasons and doesn't need a special occasion to justify itself.
