The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Not A Fresh Scent launched in 2022 as part of The Dua Brand's Original Blend Collection. It marks a different direction for the house, an original creation rather than another interpretation of an existing formula. The composition leans on a trio of cherry, raspberry, and pink pepper at the top, a pairing that immediately signals fruit over the usual citrus or aquatic route. From there, jasmine and iris carry the heart, giving the stone fruit a floral bed to rest on without burying it. The drydown settles into mossy notes and white amber, grounding the sweetness and adding a quiet weight to the finish. The brand's own copy calls it a fragrance that will change the definition of fresh scent, a wink at the assumption that fresh means cologne-clean and ozonic.
We stayed in. Cherry and raspberry lead as the main fruit sources, taking the fruit-not-floral route from the very first spray, which already breaks the typical fruity-floral script. The iris and jasmine stay restrained, almost supportive, letting the fruit stay loud through the opening while the pink pepper adds a flicker of heat that keeps the composition from reading as dessert. The mossy notes and white amber base is where the real work happens, with that earthy depth and warm resin grounding the sweetness before it tips into cloying territory.
The evolution
The opening belongs to cherry, sweet and almost syrupy at the edges, but the pink pepper runs through it like a thread of static, keeping the sweetness from settling into anything one-note. Raspberry is the co-pilot, adding a tart brightness that lifts the cherry rather than duplicating it. The jasmine arrives quiet at first, then more present as the composition settles, threading through the fruit like a cream ribbon. The iris is the real structural element here, cool and slightly rooty, and it begins pulling the composition away from pure fruit and toward something more floral-grounded. As the hours pass, the cherry softens into a jam-like warmth, the jasmine fades to a memory, and the mossy notes start showing their face. This is the pivot point, where the fragrance stops being a fruity opening and becomes a mossy, ambery close.
Cultural impact
Not A Fresh Scent sits in an interesting space within The Dua Brand's lineup as an original composition rather than a reinterpretation, which already sets it apart from much of the catalog. The name itself does the marketing, daring you to test what fresh actually means. The composition leans on cherry, raspberry, and pink pepper at the top, then anchors that fruit with jasmine, iris, mossy notes, and white amber in the base. That structure gives it crossover appeal, approachable enough for someone curious about fruity-floral fragrances but with enough earthiness and warmth to hold interest past the opening.
