The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mystery Of Myrrhe arrived in 2023 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. This particular release draws from the same conceptual well as Tom Ford's Myrrhe Mystère, an oriental built around resinous, incense-heavy materials. Myrrh sits at the center because myrrh is the mood. It opens with a bitter, almost liturgical warmth that feels pulled from somewhere ancient, the kind of note that doesn't beg for attention so much as demand silence around it. Dua's approach strips the concept down to its skeleton: myrrh, sandalwood, vanilla, musk. Four notes. No filler. The result doesn't try to be the original, it tries to be the same idea wearing different clothes.
What makes this composition work isn't complexity, it's restraint. Myrrh is one of the oldest materials in perfumery, a resin with a bitter, medicinal warmth that reads almost liturgical on skin. Rather than burying the myrr under sweetness, this composition lets it stay forward, treating the resin as the protagonist rather than a supporting player in an amber construction.
The evolution
On skin, this opens with a soft, rounded warmth rather than a sharp burst. The myrrh arrives immediately, slightly sweet in a treacle way, with the sandalwood already visible underneath, lending a creamy depth that keeps things from going thin or sharp. There's no citrus to cut through, no bright spark. It begins in the middle of its own story, which is exactly the point. The first thirty minutes feel like a held breath. By the one-hour mark, the vanilla has fully emerged, wrapping around the myrrh like a cashmere shawl. The composition gets warmer, denser, more skin-like. It's the phase where someone leaning close would catch it without trying. At the three-hour mark, the sandalwood and musk take over the architecture. The myrrh retreats but never leaves; it hums underneath, providing warmth without demanding attention. By hour six, what's left is a soft, amber-toned skin scent, powdery and warm, the kind of quiet trail that lingers on a scarf or a collar the next morning.
Cultural impact
Fragrance compositions built around myrrh and resinous materials carry a particular gravity in perfumery, an association with ritual, ceremony, and quiet intensity that has persisted across decades of scent-making. Mystery Of Myrrhe contributes to this ongoing thread, offering a focused study in the myrrh-centered oriental without ornamentation or distraction. The composition speaks to anyone drawn to incense-driven profiles, those cathedral hushes of scent that wrap around the wearer like a held breath.
