The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Italian Opera Femme is a 2025 release from The Dua Brand, composed by Mahsam Raza. It's described as inspired by La Tosca by Xerjoff, and the reference isn't subtle. La Tosca, the real one, carries an Italian opening, a rose that's earned its composure, and a drydown that holds court longer than the curtain call. The composition borrows that structural elegance without weighing itself down: citrus up top, a floral heart that builds rather than blooms, and a base that settles into warmth with real patience. Raza's interpretation keeps the original's architectural bones while making the whole thing more wearable. What remains is the romance, the structure, and the floral crescendo that made the source worth referencing. Not a tribute.
What's interesting here is what stays and what goes. The Dua Brand approach keeps the bright top (Italian lemon, green mandarin, a thread of eucalyptus that cuts through the citrus like an oboe through strings) and rebuilds the floral heart around Bulgarian rose and violet leaf. The rose is rose from Bulgaria, not rose-as-idea. There's a difference. One is a material with terroir and temperament; the other is a concept floating in alcohol. Violet leaf adds the green snap that keeps the composition from collapsing into sweetness.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are almost startling. Italian lemon and green mandarin hit with that particular sharpness, with eucalyptus snapping behind them like a window thrown open. The rose hasn't arrived yet, but you can feel where it's going. The violet leaf adds a green bitterness at the edges, like the smell of stems pulled from a vase. That's the opening. Skip the elevator. By the thirty-minute mark, the citrus hasn't left, it's just stopped yelling. Bulgarian rose arrives properly, not as a centerpiece but as a veil, with the violet leaf still threading through it. The musk and amber start to warm the structure, and the vanilla shows up the way good vanilla does: not sweet, just present. This is the heart, and it lasts. The base is where the composition proves its construction.
Cultural impact
Italian Opera Femme belongs to the Inspired Expression line from The Dua Brand. For anyone who knew La Tosca by Xerjoff, this is the version that keeps the architecture without the original's price point. The composition wears as a floral for someone who doesn't want to smell like everyone else's floral. It draws people who like their citrus sharp and their roses grown up. The fragrance occupies an interesting space in the current market. It's accessible enough for daily rotation but constructed enough to feel considered. The citrus opening gives it immediate presence, the floral heart gives it staying power, and the base gives it depth.
