The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Inception arrived in 2022 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a line that draws on well-known fragrance references and reworks them into accessible Extrait formulations. The target here was Morpheus by Amaffi, an extravagant composition that has earned attention for its price point within the luxury niche. The Dua Brand's approach involves studying the architecture of such scents and rebuilding it in a 30 mL Extrait concentration, letting a cypriol-vetiver-tonka triangle do the heavy lifting. The fragrance aims to capture a specific dry, earthy character and deliver it in a format priced for broader access.
Cypriol oil is the backbone here and the reason Inception reads earthy without veering into generic men's cologne territory. Cypriol offers a cool, rooty warmth that sits close to vetiver territory, carrying an almost mineral depth with a faintly smoky register. Pairing it with tonka bean rather than the usual sweet gourmand base keeps the composition grounded. Tonka's coumarin-rich warmth reads in an amber direction here, not as sugar, because cypriol's dryness won't let sweetness take over.
The evolution
The first spray hits dry and immediate. Cypriol dominates from minute one, pulling the nose toward wet bark, crushed root, something vaguely smoky. There is no bright citrus to cushion the entry, no easy sweetness. Just earth, close and insistent. As the opening minutes pass, the tonka begins to surface. It doesn't arrive as a sugar wave but as warmth, like body heat rising from fabric. The cypriol doesn't disappear. It deepens, settling into the base while tonka softens the edges into something that reads as skin rather than cologne. Vetiver appears in the mid-drydown, bringing a dry, grassy mineral note that keeps everything honest and prevents the warmth from tipping into gourmand territory. In the later hours of wear, the fragrance becomes mostly tonka and cypriol resin, warm and slightly sweet but never gourmand.
Cultural impact
Inception sits within the inspired-expression space, a corner of the fragrance market where recreations of high-end scent profiles are offered at accessible price points. It's a fragrance for people already familiar with the niche landscape, particularly Morpheus by Amaffi, and it tests how effectively a focused palette can stand on its own. The Chypre classification places it in a lineage that predates many of the sweeter, more aquatic compositions that dominate current mainstream fragrance releases.
