The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Impulse arrived as The Dua Brand's interpretation of Opium Pour Homme, the iconic Yves Saint Laurent original. That scent occupies a specific corner of the fragrance world, one where spiced resin, vanilla sweetness, and anis character converge into something warm and exotic, and the result has earned attention across years of wear. The Dua Brand set out to study that composition and offer their own reading of it. The result keeps the core architecture: the anis lift, the vanilla warmth, the spiced resin character that defined the original. Impulse is what happens when a house takes the structure of a legend and rebuilds it with their own hands, same blueprint, fresh mortar. The fragrance translates those familiar codes into something wearable on its own terms.
What's worth noticing is how the anis leads. Star anise sits prominently across the composition, threaded through the opening rather than handed off and forgotten. Blackcurrant adds a dusky fruit note that rounds the sharpness, lending a bassline of dark sweetness underneath the spice. Galanga stacks the heat in a way that reads as warm rather than medicinal, a clean glow rather than a burn. Cedarwood anchors the middle, and tolu balsam pulls the whole thing into a sweet, resinous close.
The evolution
The first spray hits with the pepper and star anise almost simultaneously, a sharp anis bite that feels colder than it should given the warm promises ahead. The blackcurrant surfaces early, a dark fruit sweetness that sits underneath the spice like a bassline. The opening is brisk, almost bracing, the kind of first impression that grabs rather than whispers. The bourbon vanilla begins its slow takeover as the composition settles, and the ginger shows up as clean heat, not fire. The heart phase is where this fragrance shows its depth: tolu balsam and cedarwood lock in, and the composition gets heavier, richer, more deliberate. The spice mellows into something almost edible as the wear progresses, the anis still present but now folded into a sweet resinous warmth. The drydown is tolu balsam and bourbon vanilla, a close-skin sweetness that lingers for hours.
Cultural impact
Impulse sits in a specific corner of the fragrance world, the spiced resin blend, the kind of release that brings warmth and complexity together without leaning into any single trend. The composition reads as deliberate, built around anis, vanilla, balsam, and ginger, with each note given room to contribute. It wears like a statement scent, the kind of fragrance that performs in cold weather and low light, the hours when spiced resin compositions earn their keep. The fragrance appeals to wearers who appreciate the architecture of an Oriental blend without needing to hunt for discontinued bottles.
