The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Golden Swirls of Tobacco joined The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection in 2025. The source of inspiration here is Havana Gold by Dries Van Noten, a fragrance that the label cites as a reference point for the warm, honeyed register that defines the composition. The 2025 release draws on that warmth, layering it with the house's own choices in how to render tobacco absolute and roasted tonka at this concentration. What emerges is a tobacco composition that leans into the sweeter, more golden facets of the note rather than the dry, ashy character tobacco can sometimes carry. The tobacco absolute here reads almost like cured leaf basted in honey, thick and slightly syrupy, with a roundness that keeps it from feeling sharp or bitter.
What sets this composition apart is the architecture of its warmth. Roasted tonka bean carries a toasted, almost caramelized depth that standard tonka never reaches. Pair it with benzoin and the sweetness turns resinous rather than sugary, closer to the interior of a wooden jewelry box than a dessert plate. Cypriol grounds that warmth with a dry, earthy smokiness, a vetiver relative that adds gravity without greenness. Star anise and licorice provide aromatic lift at the top, the kind of spice that reads as a memory of something herbal rather than the herb itself.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to mandarin and star anise, a brief moment of brightness that feels almost like a clearance, air moving through an open window before someone shuts it. Then the composition turns. Tobacco absolute arrives, deep and honeyed, pulling licorice and cinnamon into its orbit, and the leather accord starts to assert itself, not as a jacket but as a chair, something soft and well-used. The leather deepens across the next two hours, gaining a suede-like softness as the spices recede. As the composition settles into its later stages, the roasted tonka and benzoin come forward, and what remains is warm, resinous, faintly sweet, a drydown that sticks close to skin and lingers on fabric the next day like the ghost of a good evening.
Cultural impact
Golden Swirls of Tobacco sits in a space where tobacco-led compositions have found an audience among fragrance enthusiasts who prefer the warmer, sweeter side of the note over its drier, smokier expressions. The honeyed treatment of tobacco here, paired with roasted tonka and benzoin, creates a composition that translates as confident rather than costume. It wears close enough to feel personal, broad enough to read as polished. The choice to render tobacco as something golden and almost edible rather than ashy or sharp gives the fragrance a versatility that broader tobacco compositions sometimes lack.
