The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Dua Brand released A Gourmand Affair in 2022 as part of its Original Blend Collection, a unisex extrait de parfum aimed squarely at the sweet-tooth corner of the fragrance world. This one leans fully into the gourmand family the name promises. No pretense, no restraint, just a deliberate plunge into the edible. The brief is simple and obvious from the first spray: vanilla as the star, coconut as the supporting flesh, cupcake as the unmistakable anchor. The opening reads like a confectioner's counter, sweet, creamy, and unapologetic, with the coconut arriving almost immediately alongside a soft, powdery lift that hints at the bakery counter before you've even registered the vanilla underneath.
What defines the construction of A Gourmand Affair is how deliberately each note is chosen to build that bakery sweetness rather than hint at it. The heliotrope does quiet heavy lifting, its vanillic, powdery facets giving the cupcake note its frosting-like softness and preventing the whole composition from collapsing into pure sugar. Coconut water contributes a milky, slightly aqueous lift that keeps the sweetness from going flat, while amber's resinous warmth grounds the base, adding depth and a faint golden glow underneath the cream.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are almost aggressively sweet, tangerine briefly brightening the top before the coconut and cupcake take over with full bakery force. That citrus flicker is short-lived but effective, cutting through the initial sugar rush and giving the opening a moment of lift before the gourmand heart settles in. Around the 30-minute mark, the heliotrope blooms, pulling the composition toward a powdery, almost almond-milk warmth that softens the sharper sweetness of the first wave. This is where the orchid earns its place, adding a soft creaminess that keeps the sugar from collapsing into one-note syrup. By hour two, the white musk has settled the whole thing onto skin, and the amber is doing the real work, holding the sweetness intact while everything else softens around it. The sillage at this stage is moderate, a warm cloud that follows you without shouting.
Cultural impact
A Gourmand Affair sits firmly in the sweet-tooth lane of unisex fragrance, a composition that wears its sugar content openly and doesn't dilute the premise. Wearers who gravitate to it tend to want their fragrance to be noticed, enjoyed, even eaten (metaphorically), and this one rewards that appetite without irony. It pairs naturally with colder months and casual settings where a little extra sweetness won't feel out of place, though the soft drydown means it can easily slip into evening wear as well.
