The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Robert Graham conceived Courage as a tribute to the thrill‑seeker, a man who lives for speed and style. In 2015 perfumer Alberto Morillas was tasked with capturing that adrenaline in a bottle. The brief called for a fragrance that would arrive fully formed, skipping the expected preamble. Bergamot provided the necessary spark of citrus energy, vodka delivered an unexpected spirit-forward coolness, and guaiac wood offered the rugged mineral depth that would keep the composition grounded. The result is a fragrance that announces itself without apology.
The decision to omit opening and drydown notes was not an oversight but a deliberate choice. Morillas built Courage around the conviction that the heart notes themselves could carry the entire fragrance. Bergamot and vodka provide the initial spark, a crispness that suggests both sophistication and edge. Guaiac wood then steps in as the stabilizing force, its mineral smoke creating contrast against the spirit note. Tog ether, these three notes create a self-contained composition where each element supports the others, eliminating the need for transitional layers.
The evolution
Courage moves from its instantaneous start through a sustained heart phase to a gradual fade, with each stage defined by the interaction of bergamot, guaiac wood, and vodka. The opening delivers immediate citrus and spirit brightness. Within the first hour, guaiac wood takes command, its smoky mineral character reshaping the bergamot's freshness into something more complex and grounded. By the mid drydown, the composition has settled into a steady state where all three notes coexist at reduced intensity, eventually leaving only a faint woody-citrus memory on the skin.
Cultural impact
Since its launch, Courage has become a staple for drivers and adrenaline lovers, often cited in forums as the go‑to scent for weekend road trips. Its distinctive vodka‑citron opening sets it apart from more traditional woody colognes, earning it a niche following among those who crave a fresh, sporty vibe.
