The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Pera Malta takes its name from Malta, an island whose climate and soil have made it a pear-growing region for centuries. The inspiration is literal: orchards bathed in Mediterranean sun, fruit hanging heavy and golden, a hanging garden growing up from the stone walls. Karine Dubreuil-Sereni built the fragrance around this image, translating an island terroir into scent. Part of the Le Souffle du Mistral collection, "the breath of the Mistral", Pera Malta carries that wind's clarity and brightness. Released in 2018.
The composition centers on a single material: the pear. Not as an accent or a supporting note, but as the anchor. Karine Dubreuil-Sereni surrounded it with white florals, gardenia leaf, magnolia, jasmine, lily of the valley, that create a hanging garden effect without heaviness. The synthetic and aquatic accords add lift, keeping the florals crystalline rather than dense. Freesia and gardenia leaf open. Pear, magnolia, jasmine, and lily of the valley form the heart. White musk and amber settle in the base. This structure, a clear ingredient at the center, surrounded by complementary materials, is the house's signature approach applied directly.
The evolution
The opening is bright. Immediate. Freesia and gardenia leaf arrive together, creating a crisp green impression that makes the pear feel freshly picked rather than fabricated. Within the first hour, the heart develops: magnolia and jasmine expand alongside the pear, their petals unfurling while the gardenia recedes to a whisper. The transition isn't dramatic, it's a slow bloom. By hour three, the drydown arrives: white musk and amber wrapping around the pear like skin-warmed skin. The sweetness stays, quieter now, intimate and close. On most skin types, the full arc runs 6-8 hours. The sillage is moderate throughout. It announces itself, then settles.
Cultural impact
Pera Malta has earned a loyal following among those seeking fresh, approachable white florals. It doesn't reinvent the white floral genre, but executes with clarity and restraint. The fragrance leans into summer and daytime wear, light enough for office environments, elegant enough for events. Community comparisons to Jo Malone's English Pear & Freesia are consistent, a fair comparison that highlights how Pera Malta emphasizes the pear note more directly while adding more white floral depth. For those seeking a fresh, clean, approachable white floral in the fruity-floral family, it's a respected option.
